#BEJULYCHALLENGE14-DAY 14

14. Your zodiac and if you think it fits your personality?

So I had to truly look at the traits and definition of my zodiac sign to answer this, mine is the Taurus or bull. Below is the traits and definition of a Taurus.

- Stubborn
- Laziness
- Possessive
- Materialistic
- Self-indulging

- Dependable
- Persistent
- Loyal
- Patient
- Generous

So I think I am defiantly stubborn that is for sure and I tend to have a lazy side that for the last six months I have been aware of and tried actively deal on and work on. I am defiantly not a possessive or materialistic person. On the self-indulging I think this could hit on my issues I have had with food for the last thirty years or so, as I do tend to be self-indulging especially if I am being emotional and using food as a crutch or band aid instead of dealing with my emotions. I am pretty dependable I truly strive to be there for my friends and family. Persistent yes and this cannot also turn into ANNOYING at times lol. I am very loyal and unfortuntatly it can also be a bad quality as I stayed in my marriage for way too long for a variety of reasons and one of those reasons was because I was loyal. Patience is not a virtue of mine, I tend to have a lack of patience the older I get in life lol.

#BEJULYCHALLENGE14-DAY 13

13. Something you always think “what if…” about.

Ok so mine is the story of "The One that got away" lol That is what I always think of "what if". There was a guy I dated in high school and he was probably the first guy that I ever dated that honestly to goodness treated me like a princess. He was so sweet he always opened my car doors for me, always treated me like I was the most special thing he had ever seen. When I met him he was a few years older than me and had never really dated many people before me, because he was a shy farm boy. He was a very hard worker who worked for a local farm tire company that spent his time changing tires on tractors and trucks in the fields. We dated and even got engaged and but like a friggin idiot right before I graduated I decided to break up with him my reason being was I starting college and wanted to sow my oats just in case. Can you say IDIOT??? The worst part of this little fairy tale gone wrong is that shortly after he broke up with me he wound up dating my best friend and his best friend and the girl who set us up in the first place lol So I lost my best friend and boyfriend in the same week, and it sucked.

On the flip side had I not gone down the path I went down I of course would not have had my daughters, but I often think about that one that got away and wonder about him. I have even tried looking him up on Facebook with no luck lol Maybe one day!

Product Review-New Cheerios Protein Cereals

So I saw at Walmart a few weeks ago that General Mills had two new cereals on the market that were being sold as Cheerios Protein Cereals. So being of course a pre-op patient whom is going to really have to push her protein intake this peeked my interest. But the truth is when you look a little deeper at the actual product, things can be very deceiving.

So the two new flavors they are offering are Cheerios Protein Oats & Honey and also Cheerios Protein Honey & Cinnamon. Now for full disclosure I only personally tried one box the Cheerios Protein Oats & Honey for this article. Now one of the first things you need to read on box is that it contains a nice big red circle that boasts "11 g Protein" but what you might now see right underneath that is the tiny words "with milk".  Now this is important because without milk that you add the cereal itself only has 7 g of protein which is not unlike alot of other cereals on the market. So to me it felt as if they lure you in thinking you are getting 11 g of protein before you add your cereal, and if you are not a label reader like I am you would be very disappointed.

So the protein is not as much as they claim on the front of the box but when you compare the cereals to regular plain Cheerios the grams of sugars and the high carb count make this cereal a dangerous morning meal for weight loss surgery patients. Here is the break down between the three cereals.

Regular Plain Cheerios- 1 c serving size contains 100 calories, 2 grams fat, 20g carbs, 3g protein, 3g fiber, 1g sugars, 160 sodium

Cheerios Protein Oats & Honey- 1 and 1/4 cup serving size contains 210 calories, 3g fat, 42g carbs, 7g protein, 4g fiber, 17g sugar, 280mg sodium

Cheerios Protein Honey & Cinnamon- 1 and 1/4 cup serving size contains 22 calories, 5g fat, 40g carbs, 7g protein, 3g fiber, 16g sugar, 220mg sodium

While alot of companies these days are all hoping on the protein bandwagon which is great for us weight loss surgery patients, we also have to be mindful that just because it taunts high protein does not mean the sugar and carb count is good for us. While the taste of the cereal is good it is a nice sweet cereal with a great crunch but it is not sickening sweet like your kids version of cereals. But if you are wanting Cheerios and you are watching your weight I would suggest going for your regular Cheerios than wasting your money on the new Protein versions. Even though your regular version of Cheerios may not have but 3g of protein if you drink a full glass of milk with your Cheerios you can add another 8g protein to your breakfast and make it a healthier alternative than the new Protein Cereals they are offering.  For even more protein you could add a unflavored protein powder to your cereal or add some walnuts or almonds to get a little bit more protein in a healthier fashion.

Disclaimer: I do not receive any compensation from anyone for my product reviews currently these are based on my own personal opinions.

Strawberry and Mint Infused Water Recipe

So since I am striving hard to only drink zero calorie drinks I realized that I really needed to boost my water intake, but sometimes it is nice to have some flavor to your water so I like to do water infused flavors using fresh fruits and veggies. Yesterday while at Walmart I was actually looking for a water infused pitcher as those are really nice because you put your fruit and or veggies in a cylinder that goes into the middle of  the pitcher, thus preventing the pulp from getting into your water. However they were out but they did have water infuser drinking glasses as  you can see from my photo below, it is the same concept it has a cylinder in the middle to hold the fruit or veggies, then eliminating the pulp getting into your water.

10527350_10203001501932759_4183564153972758398_n

This is a very easy recipe that is suppose to be a great recipe to help detox your body, and it very refreshing especially if you are looking for a good alternative that is not sweet.

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 Strawberries thin sliced

  • Handful of mint leaves between 10-13 leaves

  • Pitcher full of water with ice cubes

Directions:
Slice up a few strawberries into thin strips, then put these into a pitcher filled with water and ice which is optional. Now take a handful of mint leaves around 10-13 leaves and put this into the ice water with cucumber. Let this water sit in your fridge overnight or for a few hours before you drink your water infused, the flavors will keep stronger and richer the longer they sit in the water. You can refill your pitcher one more time with water when it is over before you need to throw out your mint and strawberries.

Benefits:

Water or H2O-of course is awesome for our bodies one of the biggest benefits of water is that it helps to remove the toxins and impurities from our body, this also helps to give our organs an easier job of functioning.

Mint Leaves-Mint leaves help to provide a nice refreshing mint flavor to anyone’s water, but on top of the refreshing flavor it has other great benefits as well. Mint will help you digest easier, helps with bile production from your liver, mint also helps cramps in your stomach muscles.

Strawberries-The benefits of strawberries are immune system protection, blood sugar regulation, digestion

Getting Myself Out Of My Funk

So you know how it goes we have all been there, you get into what I like to call a FUNK but I am sure a doctor would say a depressive state. Well I have been in one of those since they canceled my surgery and I have gained weight, shocker I know right? Couple that with my daughters accident and it has been a lovely few weeks to say the very least. But the one thing I have been trying so hard to do is to pull myself out of it.

Yes my surgery got delayed, but at least it is not permanently canceled. Yes my daughter was in a accident, but at least she is alive and will be ok. Still wasn't helping and then yesterday I decided what it was is that I have been slacking on my exercise, yes I go to water aerobics but even that I have been slacking. So I decided I needed to shake up my routine and do something fun or something different so I decided to look into walking hiking trails.

Wouldn't you know there was one like a half mile from my house it is centennial Park in Swansea, IL  and it so peaceful and gorgeous there I cannot even explain.  From the moment you get there you see you have two choices one is a hiking trail or the other is a concrete biking trail that goes around the park. For my choice I chose the walking and hiking path because you start the trail walking over a beautiful bridge and it peaked my interest. So with water bottle in hand, tunes playing in my ears, and my sidekick Chewy we were off on a adventure.

[gallery ids="1475,1476,1477,1478,1479,1480,1481,1482"]

The trail is one mile from start to finish and it was so breathtaking it was like I was in my own little magical forest. There were other people who occasionally walked or ran by, some with their dogs for the most part it was so quite and peaceful. Even met a old man along the way and stopped and chatted with him. Now the only thing I would change is that fact that about every half a mile I still need to stop and catch my breathe, but I usually only allow myself between 30 seconds to a minute.

Now today I pulled into the YMCA to go water aerobics and realized my friend was not there today, and I decided the walking trail might be more fun. I was kind of worried about trying it today because for whatever reason I felt dog tired this morning and just dragging all morning long. So I went home grabbed my water bottle, got my tennis shoes and grabbed my dog and off we went. Again there was maybe three people I saw on the trail the entire day and it was so beautiful, and today I noticed that little Chewy handled the walk much better he was not panting as much as yesterday. So after resting for five minutes after our first mile, I decided to challenge our butts and go for mile two. And the mile two went even faster than the first. It is just a peaceful spot and I am so glad that I found it and I think it finally got me out of my funk.

Lime Chicken with Rainbow Peppers and Broccoli

For this recipe, you will need a few simple ingredients:

4 boneless chicken breasts (no skin and preferably organic)
3 Limes
A rainbow of peppers from orange and red to green and yellow

Again, marinating this the night before will work wonders with the flavors of the lime and the chicken.

Mix a ¼ cup of extra pressed, extra virgin olive oil, the juice of the limes, two cloves of garlic, some parsley and salt and pepper to taste. Place the chicken breasts in the mixture of marinade.

Refrigerate overnight, turning occasionally. The next evening, all you have to do is stir-fry your rainbow of peppers and broccoli in a sauté pan with olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste.

Once the vegetables are sautéed, meaning that they are cooked through but still have a little bit of a bite to them, add the chicken to the pan, sautéing on each side until lightly browned and no longer pink on the inside.

You will have a combination of lime chicken, rainbow peppers, and broccoli. Adding a whole food such as a legume like black kidney beans will add to the recipe and fill up your family.

Once again, you have a tasty delicious, nutritious, satisfying meal in a hurry - using three ingredients.

Now that you have a little background on how easy it is to make three ingredient meals and how doing so with whole foods is something achievable, here is some information about preparing whole foods ahead of time.

Not only does preparing whole foods ahead of time make life easier and quicker, it really is one of the healthiest ways to go, as far as quick meals are concerned.

Portion Sizes and Healthy Eating After Weight Loss Surgery

So in my support group last night the topic was portion sizes and how when we are eating normally we tend to eat several portions without even knowing it. One of the examples she used was to eat on a smaller plate, by doing so you are more likely to eat the right portion sizes then if you filled a larger normal dinner size plate. Right now I am trying to educate myself on how many carbs I should be eating after surgery, and portion sizes and more. So this is still a big learning lesson for me and I am absorbing and learning as I go along.

After surgery you will only be able to handle a few ounces of food at a time, gradually you will be able to handle more and eventually you will be able to handle about a cup of food. That is not alot of food at one time so you need to make that food count, taking into consideration your protein you need in a day. One of the examples they showed last night which was a great one is when out with family or maybe even in public if you use the size of a baseball in your mind, that is about a cup of food. That way you are not having to carry around a scale or measuring cup but you are able to visually eyeball it as they say.

The biggest thing I will have to learn and work on after surgery is to chew your food to a applesauce consistency, failure to do so could make you choke on your food, or also make you have discomfort in your pouch or stomach. Another trick we will have to learn is to eat slowly so that our brain can register you are eating and allow for a full sensation. The other trick is to learn to stop as soon as you have that full feeling and not overeating beyond that point. Doing so could result in vomiting, diarrhea and or constipation none of which are a good thing.

Another thing we will need to learn is that you cannot eat and drink at the same time, you will need to wait at least 30 minutes after eating to drink anything. And I have posted this video before but it is always great to have a little reminder of why.

11. Weird quirk(s) you have ?

Ok so I don't know if it is a weird quirk ok YES it is, and it is probably a dirty little secret too lol. Admit it I have you very intrigued at this point don't I? Ok here is a hint the photo below is a hint to my weird quirk I have, can you guess what this quirk is? $10 bets you cannot unless  your name is Lisa, Melanie or Torie lol.

10534490_10203001688817431_3997383170166917165_n

Ok my quirk is that I bought a new washing machine when I moved into my home in September and it is one of those machines that does not have the middle agitators. Now take that and combine it with the fact that I have freakishly short arms and you have an idea of where I am going. I use metal tongs to grab items that are in the bottom because I cannot reach them to put them in my dryer. My besties Melanie and Lisa and my own parents think this is a hysterical site to watch me struggling to get clothes out of the bottom of the washing machine. And YES I use tongs lol so my dirty little secret is out there for everyone to know lol

#BEJULYCHALLENGE14-DAY 9

9. Last time you cried?

This is a easy one I have cried twice this week lol Once on Sunday the day after my daughter was in a car accident after a a drunk girl hit them. I could not cry on Saturday because I knew I had to drive all the way to Tulsa, OK and back and then also poor Torie has no memory and kept repeating stuff all day Sat that I had to be strong for her. It didn't come out until I got up on Sunday it was like the minute my feet hit the floor out of my bed the tears just began to roll. At that moment I proceeded to a hot shower and just bawled my eyes out, and replay the day and it's events in my mind and how close I came to loosing  my baby girl. At that moment I was overwhelmed and my friend Lisa had spent the night so I told her I felt the need to go to church and thank God for sparing my daughter and the other three kids in the car. The whole day was a emotional mess for me, I was finding myself crying or being emotional over everything lol. Second time I cried was today when my Surgeon's office called me to reschedule my pre-op testing appointment. I was sad because I have been waiting since Decemeber 16th for this surgery and working my butt off and it just seems to get farther away. Logically I realize that sooner or later it will happen, but it is just getting kind of depressing at this point lol

By The Grace Of God He Saved My Daughter

So my daughter was to go on a family Fourth of July event with her boyfriend's family for the weekend and they decided they were going to travel after she got off work at 9 pm on Fourth of July since they had a 8 hour drive to Oklahoma. Her boyfriend's Mother and I both felt uneasy about this and we voiced our concerns to the kids and her boyfriends father who was accompany them. The plan was for her boyfriend's Dad and his girlfriend and her daughter to be in the car in front, and then her boyfriend and his brother and sister and my daughter would be in the second car.

At 4:37 am I received a phone call from my daughter crying hysterically like I have never heard before in my life and pray I never hear again. She told me they had been in a car accident, of course my first question was everyone ok? She was confused and unsure at that moment if she was ok and if the other passengers were ok, I told her to get off the phone with me and dial 911 and then call me right back. While I waited I contacted her boyfriend's Mother to warn her of the pending phone call from her son so she was awake and alert when the call came.  Fifteen minutes later my daughter called back and this time when I answered "Mom we were in a accident" I said hun don't you remember calling me 15 minutes ago she said No Did I? So then she went to say "Mom I don't have my health insurance information" to which I told her it was ok that I would take care of that. Then she was worried about her puppy that was with them "Mom who is going to take care of Sam?" I assured her that Seth's father would make arrangements. Next she started repeating herself asking me those same two questions over and over again, and then saying "Mom we were in a accident" I knew at that moment that something was NOT right with my daughter. I told her to put her boyfriend on the phone and I told him that she was having memory issues, and repeating herself over and over again that she needed to be seen.

While waiting on more information I began the packing process and trying to keep myself composed knowing I had a 6 1/2 hour drive to Tulsa, OK. At this point I had not even allowed myself to cry, all I was freaking out about was the fact that I had to wait 6 1/2 hours to hold my daughter in my arms and know she was ok. Along the way I picked up my daughters boyfriend's Mom Amy and we rode together. By the time we got to the hospitial we saw all four kids that were in the car,  my daughters boyfriend only had small cuts and like rug burns on his arms so he was ok luckily. His brother had to receive 8 staples in the back of his head, and his sister had to get 21 stitches to her forhead and a broken nose, my daughter suffered a bad concusion with memory loss, and repeating patterns and neck and back injury. So luckily they were alive and all in one piece.

Before we headed home we took the kids to CVS to fill their prescriptions for pain killers and muscle relaxers so the kids could ride home comfortably. We also stopped by the accident scene to see what exactly happened below is the photos from the car accident scene. Car Accident Scene Photos had a hard time getting off my broken phone! From what we know the lady who hit our kids was driving with her parking lights on and NO headlights at 4:37 am so they never saw her coming. If you are looking at the photos on the highway she was in the far left lane she hit the concrete wall there and then smashed into the back of our kids and then veered off and down a large hill and through a fence and then about 200 ft into the woods. Luckily she lived as well.

[gallery ids="1400,1401,1402,1403,1404,1405,1406,1407,1408,1409"]

It didn't hit me until about 15 minutes into cleaning out the car in the tow yard that my daughter was a passenger in the backseat of that car. and I was so lucky she survived considering she was right where the impact was at. It was so hard getting all of the items out of the car that were covered in the kids blood, it was simply awful feeling. Luckily they all survived.

7. A difficult time in your life?

Well this one is pretty personal, and one I do not like to talk about, but nineteen years ago I had a daughter that I gave up for adoption. This was a very lonely process, that I have not quite forgiven myself for yet. In a nutshell my husband and I were seperated at the time and I got involved with a guy who was abusive and threatened me and the unborn baby. Due to this I had to move away from my area and start over. For the safety of the child, and the fact I had reconciled with my husband and informed me that he would not raise the baby I decided to give her up. I went through this adoption process alone, it was simply put the worse nine months of my life. Feeling her kick and grow inside of me and knowing that I could not keep her was agony. The worst part was after I gave birth to her on May 19th, 1995 she came out and was the only child of  mine that looked like a spitting image of me, it was like looking into my own eyes. She was beautiful and I named her Angel.  I was only able to be with her for 24 hours, the worst part and I am choking up now just writing this is that I gave birth to her on a Friday, and they made me leave her on a Saturday and she had to stay at the hospitial ALONE until Monday when the agency could come get her. I cannot even tell you how hard it was to walk away from her, then to combine the pain and angious I felt I had to sign the adoption papers a few days later and again I was alone. The pregnancy was something not discussed in my family, or the adoption and I think it was because No One knew how to handle it, but it was a very lonely time in my life and one I know I have not dealt with or healed from fully. My hopes is with this surgery and getting healthy that I will be able to see my daughter and present to her a healthy and happy Mother who loves her dearly!

6. Something or someone you miss ?

I have several people that I miss but the person I will talk about today is  my Grandma who we referred to as "Maggaw" she was my Step Mom's Mother but I had known my Step Mom and her Family ever since I was two years old. So when my Dad married my Step Mom or my Mom as I refer to her I was blessed by knowing the family for most of my life already. Maggaw she was a special person and no one can match her personality or strength. She was stubborn at times and was known to hold her ground if she felt she was right which proved to be a funny ying and yang between her and her husband Pop Pop. But the one thing I loved more than anything about Maggaw is when my Dad married her daughter she took me and my Brother and Sister in as though we had been her Grandchildren from day one. Never once did I ever feel like a "Step Grandkid" or less than, she always made us feel so loved, special and unique from day one. This was such a blessing as the blending of a new family can be a difficult one, but Maggaw made it so much easier. She was there for all my big moments in my life even having my daughters, she was such light in my life and one I miss daily. I miss her smart ass comments, her loud personality, her funny one liners and her kind and loving and nurturing heart. She was our "Maggaw"

#BEjulychallenge14-Day 5

5. Your worst habits?

This one is also hard lol I guess my number worst habit that I am trying to correct is eating all the wrong foods when I am stressed or in a bad mood. I have a terrible tendency to use food as a tool to comfort me rather than learning to deal with my emotions and issues on my own, this is something I have been working hard on the last six months. Learning to recognize my triggers, and how to deal with my emotions in a better way than using food to comfort me.

#BEjulychallenge14-Day 4

4. Most proud moment?

Probably most moment was in September of last year when I finally conquered my nasty horrible habit of smoking! This was a monkey on my back that I had fought for over 20 years and towards the end I was battling up to two packs a day. What made me stop was I watched a show where it told the importance of not smoking if you were going to have the gastric bypass surgery, and I wanted to make sure I had been quit for awhile to prove to the surgeon that I was serious about non smoking! It was hard I started off with a nicotine patch at level 2 and then also the BLU electronic cigarette to help with my oral fixation and than I weeded out the BLU cigarette in two weeks afterwards.
