Pre-Op Liquid Diet Phase for Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric Bypass Preop DietSo I went for my classes yesterday to get me educated and ready for my upcoming surgery. On my next appointment which should be next week with my surgeon I will get an actual surgery date. Usually right after that surgery date they make you go on a 7-10 day liquid diet. The purpose of this liquid diet is to shrink your liver down enough that they do not have to move it around so much during surgery. This is a very important process and one you cannot cheat on. Below is the information I received from my dieitician about the diet please remember what your doctors office tells you may differ this is just a general outline.

  • Drink up to 3-4 Protein shake drinks these drinks need to contain the following: 200 calories or less, 15-25 grams of protein, 10 grams or less of carbs, 5 grams of fat

Then you can have any of the below as they are considered clear liquids:

  • Thin broths like chicken or beef NO veggies or noodles

  • Sugar free jello any flavor or color

  • Sugar free popsicles

  • decaf coffee and tea

  • sugar free and non carbonated drinks like powerade zero, crystal light, propel and more

  • artifical sweetner of choice

Now 48 hours before surgery you STOP drinking protein supplements and only do the clear liquids listed above
